41.6: Presidential Public Financing

Abolish the entire presidential public financing system, including the matching funds program for the primaries and the public grant for the general election.

Other Information:

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has said, "Eliminating this program would save taxpayers $617 million over ten years, and would require candidates and political parties to rely on private contributions rather than tax dollars." Less than 10 percent of taxpayers check the $3 box on their tax returns. President Obama opted out of the public financing system in 2008 and 2012, and Governor Mitt Romney opted out in 2012. Both campaigns shattered fundraising and spending records, so it is hard to imagine a future major presidential candidate using this system.
