We hope to create a robust map of social sector data and information initiatives from around the world. Here are examples
of the kind of efforts we see as part of this landscape. Inclusion in this list does not mean involvement or endorsement from
Markets for Good or its funders, but we find these projects interesting and informative.

- Financial SCAN: Financial SCAN goes beyond IRS Form 990 data to create comprehensive, standardized analyses of nonprofits' financial health.
Combining GuideStar data with Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) expert analysis, Financial SCAN brings insights to financial data,
supporting mission-driven decisions. It is a valuable tool for anyone who needs to understand, analyze, or communicate a nonprofit's
financial story.
- Open Eligibility Project: The Open Eligibility Project is a collaborative for a better human service taxonomy. The taxonomy is a simple way to categorize
human services and human situations. With these common categories, we, as service providers, navigators, and people in need,
can find human services quickly and easily.
- Code for America Commons: The Code for America Commons is many people coming together around a single mission: to help the thousands of government entities
share technology for the public good. The CfA Commons is a community-edited catalogue of civic technology and where it's being
used. Join the discussion in the CfA Commons about "what works, where": add notes and updates about deployments of civic technology,
and learn what others are doing. The civic tech community should share knowledge and best practices; by adding to the collective
knowledge of the Commons, you can help the community ensure that what's known somewhere is known everywhere.
- DataKind: DataKind (formerly known as Data Without Borders) brings together leading data scientists with high impact social organizations
through a comprehensive, collaborative approach that leads to shared insights, greater understanding, and positive action
through data in the service of humanity.
- The Foundation Center: The Foundation Center combines grants information, data visualization, research, news, and social media into custom web portals
for donors, practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders. An example is WASHfunders.org for those interested in water
access, sanitation, and hygiene issues around the world.
- Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN): The IRIS initiative of the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) oversees the development of a set of standardized metrics
for describing an organization's social, environmental, and financial performance. IRIS was developed to provide a common
reporting language of impact-related terms and metrics. By standardizing the way organizations communicate their social and
environmental performance, IRIS aims to increase the value of non-financial data by enabling performance comparisons and benchmarking,
while also streamlining and simplifying reporting requirements for companies and their investors.
- YouthTruth: YouthTruth® is a national survey project that gathers candid and actionable feedback from high school and middle school students
about their experiences at school — what they believe is working well and what could be improved. The project provides rigorous
data collection and analysis and engages school communities for change. YouthTruth is an initiative of the Center for Effective
Philanthropy.
- The World Bank: The World Bank is the largest single source of development knowledge. The World Bank Open Knowledge Repository is The World
Bank's official open access repository for its research outputs and knowledge products. By extending and improving access
to World Bank research, the World Bank aims to encourage innovation and allow anyone in the world to use and reuse Bank knowledge,
free from restriction, to develop solutions to development problems that will help improve the lives of poor people around
the world.
- Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA): Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is dedicated to discovering what works to help the world's poor. Tackling global poverty
is too important to leave to chance. Which is why Innovations for Poverty Action has launched the Proven Impact Initiative
- dedicated to ensuring that charitable giving is increasingly focused on those ideas that have been proven to work through
rigorous evaluation in the real world.
- Open Indicators Consortium: Weave is a new web-based visualization platform designed to enable visualization of any available data anywhere by anyone
for any purpose. Weave has been developed at the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research of the University of
Massachusetts Lowell in partnership with the Open Indicators Consortium, a national collaborative of public and nonprofit
organizations working to improve access to more and higher quality data. Weave is being used by communities, cities, states
and both national and international organizations.
- Cultural Data Project (CDP): The Cultural Data Project (CDP) is a powerful online management tool designed to strengthen the arts and cultural sector.
The CDP's unique system enables arts and cultural organizations to track trends and benchmark their progress through sophisticated
reporting tools, while gathering reliable, comprehensive data that grantmakers, researchers, and advocates can use to better
understand the sector.
- WINGS Philanthropy Data Project: The WINGS Philanthropy Data Project aims to promote a culture of data management for philanthropy by collecting data in different
regions, generating comparable information, improving decision-making, and providing the sector with a better understanding
of philanthropy worldwide.
- Glasspockets.org: Glasspockets.org, a project of the Foundation Center, encourages best practices and benchmarking in foundation transparency.
- Pull Approach: Pull Approach leverages the power of global database solutions and advanced enterprise, using advanced technology to combine
open innovation platforms, problem definition tools and experts to analyze the development of a region.
- Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society: The Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (Stanford PACS) develops and shares knowledge to improve philanthropy,
strengthen civil society and effect social change.
- Center for Digital Information: The Center for Digital Information‘s mission is to lead the policy research community — think tanks, foundations, government
agencies, NGOs and educational institutions — in a fundamental rethinking of how it communicates its findings in a digital
society.
- socialsca.pe: socialsca.pe is a mapping and discovery platform to help connect the social impact community. Emerging as prototype developed
in partnership with Ashoka and the pioneering support of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation we are currently organizing
for our next phase of development.
