2: Supporting Organizations
Facilitate Type 1 Supporting Organizations Other Information:
NPT can facilitate a Type 1 Supporting Organization, which offers the same tax advantage as a donor-advised fund.
Stakeholder(s):
- Supporting Organizations: Supporting Organizations are a popular choice for philanthropists who desire more control over grantmaking and investments
than a donor-advised fund, but less expense and administrative burden than a private foundation. Many supporting organizations
are created with a specific issue-area in mind. To support those goals, NPT's expert staff can execute specialized grants,
including research grants with benchmarks for funding, endowed chairs at universities and other institutions, or naming rights
to a building.
- Saint Agatha Foundation: The Saint Agatha Foundation was founded in 2004 to provide support, comfort and care to breast cancer patients. We help individuals—particularly
the under-insured and uninsured—in the Central New York area by providing financial assistance to cover a range of costs for
treatment and recovery.
- Atkins Foundation: The Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation was established in 1999 with a $40 million gift following Dr. Atkins' death
in 2003. The Foundation funds independent scientific research examining the role of metabolism and nutrition in obesity, diabetes,
cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's Disease and other serious health concerns confronting our society today. One of the few
grant-making organizations dedicated to research in this arena, it also supports educational programs and endowed professorships
at major universities. The Atkins Foundation, which is not affiliated with and operates independently of Atkins Nutritionals,
Inc., is governed by a board of directors led by Veronica Atkins under the stewardship of National Philanthropic Trust, an
independent public charity that manages more than $1 billion in charitable assets and has disbursed more than $1.5 billion
in grants to charities around the globe. The mission of the Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation is to positively
impact and elevate the role of nutrition in health and lifestyle through a proactive grant-making strategy that seeks to invest
in the science of nutrition and the formulation of nutrition policy. Recognizing that we cannot do this by ourselves, the
Foundation will achieve its goals by finding partners in the public, private and nonprofit sectors who will join us in collectively
rethinking the role of nutrition in disease prevention and health management.
