What is the size, shape, age, and energy content of the universe? In the beginning, the universe was smooth and almost featureless,
but today it is richly diverse. This diversity includes invisible “darkmatter,” black holes, and other exotic phenomena. To
investigate the transition , an improved cosmic microwave background mapper soon will study how clusters of galaxies emerged
in the very early universe. A joint far-infrared telescope mission with the European Space Agency (ESA) will observe dusty
galaxies undergoing intensive star formation. Another space-based observatory will view cosmic x-rays to learn how clusters
of galaxies evolve.
