3: Ethics & Accountability
Help organizations maintain the highest standards of ethics and accountability. Other Information:
Maintaining the public trust is crucial to the success of the nonprofits and foundations. That confidence helps charitable
organizations win the resources—including donations of time, money, and other support—that allow us to pursue our missions
in creative and responsive ways. Independent Sector remains a leader in helping organizations maintain the highest standards
of ethics and accountability so they preserve that trust. Our latest contribution to support these efforts is our new online
Resource Center for Good Governance and Ethical Practice. It offers organizations hundreds of free examples of effective practice
and tools, as well as other resources from around the country to guide their work. The Resource Center features the Principles
for Good Governance and Ethical Practice: A Guide for Charities and Foundations, developed by the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector,
which outlines 33 principles of sound practice related to legal compliance and public disclosure, effective governance, financial
oversight, and responsible fundraising. These principles, especially in conjunction with the Principles Workbook, help organizations
assess and improve their operations. Organizations that have applied the Principles report increased capacity to achieve their
missions, including improved governance, stronger organizational cultures and practices, and increased credibility with funders,
individual donors and community partners.
