2.1: Critical Mass
Increase the size of the institute to attain a critical mass in each focus area Other Information:
Measures: Total annual funding, diversity of funding, gearing ratio, number of academic staff. UNU-IIST currently has six
academic staff members and one director (the latter spends approximately half his time on academic activities). The average
annual number of project staff, fellows, and PhD students in the institute over the past four years has been 34. This number
does not provide the institute with sufficient critical mass to gain recognition as a pre-eminent research center. Yet achieving
international prominence is crucial to attracting funding, top researchers and students, as well as sustaining the growth
of the institute. This objective leads to the following sub-goals.
