Although they play a critical role in electoral democracies, political parties are also often regarded as the weakest link of democracy. In the 2012–17 strategy period, the Institute will expand its work on political participation and representation. International IDEA shall focus on improving the credibility, effectiveness and delivery capacity of the institutions of participation and representation, in particular political parties.
