The strategic review Science and Society: Rights and Responsibilities (ICSU, 2005a) identified a number of ethical and other
issues, such as scientific uncertainty and risk, that are influencing the interface between science and society. These issues
will be addressed, as far as possible, in the context of new strategic initiatives (as detailed elsewhere in this plan).
