7.1: Policy
Ensure that science is integrated into policy development at the international and national level and that relevant policies
take account both of scientific knowledge and the needs of science.
Other Information:
“Good science is necessary for good decision-making and policy development at the local, national and international level”.
This is one of the key messages that ICSU communicated to the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, 2002)
and the World Summit on the Information Society (Geneva, 2003). ICSU is committed to building on this conviction and ensuring
that the voice of the international science community is heard at important international fora. ICSU and its Interdisciplinary
Bodies have played an important role in providing scientific input to international conventions pertinent to environmental
protection and sustainable development, such as the UN Conventions on Climate Change and Biological Diversity. The strengthening
of these conventions will be important to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and implementation of the Johannesburg
and Geneva action plans. ICSU continues to have a key role to play in this context, including, for example, reinforcing the
Convention to Combat Desertification with new scientific knowledge from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.
