Documents/HUD/4: Equal Opportunity Housing/D2: Public Awareness

D2: Public Awareness

Improve public awareness of rights and responsibilities under fair housing laws.

Other Information:

HUD views enforcement of fair housing laws as going hand-in-hand with increasing public awareness of those laws and the avenues for reporting violations. Many people remain unaware of protections provided by the law, and according to “How Much Do We Know?” only5 percent of the people who believe they experienced housing discrimination contact a government agency, a fair housing organization, or a lawyer. To address these findings, HUD launched an award-winning multi-media campaign in 2003 to expand awareness of fair housing laws and methods for filing complaints. These efforts contributed greatly to a 14 percent increase in the number of discrimination complaints reported to HUD and substantially equivalent fair housing agencies between 2003 and 2005.HUD will continue to work in cooperative effort with tenants, builders, landlords, and other stakeholders to improve understanding and compliance with Fair Housing laws.
