In addition to helping families become homeowners, HUD is supporting new homeowners in maintaining their homeownership status
through housing counseling, foreclosure prevention activities, and better monitoring of appraisers. Because HUD requires participating
lenders to employ loss mitigation techniques, over59 percent of families who defaulted on FHA insured mortgages in FY 2005
were able to workout their delinquencies and remain in their homes.
