How We Will Accomplish Our Objective: Prevention: - Support a coordinated approach to addressing the risk and protective factors that are associated with problem behaviors, including substance abuse, in order to achieve positive health outcomes. - Support communities in assessing factors impacting substance abuse; developing a strategic plan; identifying, adapting, and adopting evidence-based practices; mobilizing the community through coalitions; and evaluating outcomes. - Support surveillance and data systems that monitor substance abuse, especially among populations disproportionately affected by substance abuse. - Conduct research to understand the causes of addiction and to develop new prevention methods. Treatment: - Provide support to states, tribes, and communities to improve alcohol and drug treatment programming. - Develop mechanisms that enable those in need of addiction treatment and recovery support services to choose the programs and providers that will help them the most. - Develop innovative ways to encourage public and private financing alternatives for treatment services. - Provide support for identification, dissemination, and adoption of evidence-based practices. - Provide support to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and competencies of treatment and related-health professionals. - Provide support for data systems that track substance abuse treatment service delivery characteristics and outcomes. - Conduct research to develop new treatment methods.
