- The GMEC and its subcommittees and workgroups are a voluntary forum for evaluating environmental priorities and discussing
and making recommendations on the coordination of Gulf of Mexico management plans. The committee is supported through the
Agency's Strategic Goal 4: Healthy Communities and Ecosystems, Objective 3- Protect, sustain and restore the health of natural
habitats and ecosystems. Efforts by this Committee structure support the Gulf Program activities and will continue to underpin
the Gulf States Governors' Alliance and the five-year Action Plan II of specific challenges designed to enhance the environmental
and economic health of the Gulf of Mexico. The Focus Areas of the Alliance are Water Quality for Healthy Beaches and Shellfish
Beds; Coastal Conservation and Restoration, Environmental Education, Ecosystem Integration and Data, and Nutrients and Nutrient
Impacts, and Community Resilience.
