Promote Health through Wellness and Prevention Other Information:
Appalachia suffers from disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
This has a significant adverse effect on workforce participation and productivity, and impedes opportunity for economic growth.
Education on positive health behaviors is key to developing a stronger workforce and ensuring the long-term viability of the
Region. Selected Strategies: Promote nutrition education, physical activity, and early screening as a means of eliminating
or reducing the incidence of obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Support programs that help eliminate drug and/or
alcohol abuse. Encourage the development of initiatives and investments that promote healthy lifestyles.
