This goal responds to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment finding that, in the last half of the 20th century, humans degraded ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than in all previous history. By necessity, the goal has a strong people focus, aiming to reverse ecosystem degradation while improving human well-being.
