3: The Commons
Strengthen the “commons” we have begun to create Other Information:
We learned from our membership survey that approximately two-thirds of NCDD’s members join the Coalition because of their
desire to be an active part of developing the dialogue and deliberation community/movement. At the same time, members gave
higher ratings for NCDD’s effort than for the actual utility of the services we provide. This suggests that people identify
with the larger goals of the field and the organization, but do not always see clear personal benefits from their involvement
in NCDD. In addition, some of our members admitted to feeling “lost” within the big tent that NCDD has erected for this emerging
field. As a result, the strategic planning process includes both a strategy for ensuring that our members identify with and
are inspired by our broad overall mission and vision (discussed above) as well as a strategy for meeting our members diverse
needs more directly. While maintaining NCDD’s “broad umbrella,” we hope to better serve the diverse interests and motivations
represented within our membership.
