1: Strategic Identity

Clarify who we are, who we serve, and what we do

Other Information:

Since its inception, NCDD has shepherded the emergence of the rapidly-growing dialogue and deliberation field. The need to revisit and further develop foundational statements—including mission, vision, and values—emerged from the strategic planning process as fundamental to continuing and broadening that leadership. Our membership survey and interviews showed that clarifying NCDD’s purpose and scope is vital for retaining people’s commitment to and involvement in NCDD. NCDD’s conferences attract participation from outside of the U.S. without any international recruiting efforts, our web-based resources are useful to people in many countries, and over 30 countries are represented in our membership. NCDD inspired and assisted the creation of the recent Canadian Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation (C2D2) and forthcoming Canadian Community for Dialogue & Deliberation. And NCDD and C2D2 inspired the recently created African Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation, and a Zambian Center for Dialogue and Deliberation. For all of these reasons, NCDD also needs to clarify its role in fostering dialogue & deliberation coalitions and gatherings outside of the U.S. and its relationship to these international efforts.
