NATO members will always assist each other against attack, in accordance with Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. That commitment

where they threaten the fundamental security of individual Allies or the Alliance as a whole. Defence and deterrence -- The
2010 Strategic Concept states that collective defence is the Alliance's greatest responsibility and "deterrence, based on
an appropriate mix of nuclear and conventional capabilities, remains a core element" of NATO's overall strategy. While stressing
that the Alliance does not consider any country to be its adversary, it provides a comprehensive list of capabilities the
Alliance aims to maintain and develop to counter existing and emerging threats. These threats include the proliferation of
nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and other weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery; terrorism, cyber attacks
and key environmental and resource constraints.
