6: Engineering Ethics
Promote the field of engineering ethics and public and professional interest in it, through the Engineering Ethics Center
(EEC).
Other Information:
A gift from member Harry E. Bovay Jr. allowed the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to launch the Engineering Ethics Center
(EEC) in Spring 2007. The EEC will promote the field of engineering ethics and public and professional interest in it. As
complexity and connections among regions and peoples of the world increase, so do the ethical questions associated with technological
development and innovation. Societal attention to these questions also increases. Engineers and engineering professions and
organizations that include engineers play major roles in designing, testing, implementing and evaluating these technologies.
It is appropriate then for the NAE Ethics Center to develop activities that enable multi-disciplinary examination of these
issues and engage the public and representatives of public organizations in their consideration. To meet these goals, the
EEC has appointed an advisory group and is planning several activities: * Meetings on "Engineering Ethics and Engineering
Leadership" * Fellowships in Engineering Ethics The Bovay gift has also allowed the NAE to launch the new Online Ethics Center
(OEC) as part of the Engineering Ethics Center
