The NAE and the NRC Board on Energy and Environmental Systems recently completed a major hydrogen study for the Department
of Energy. The purpose of this study was to determine how the U.S. can move to a hydrogen-based economy, primarily in the
transport sector. By now it is well understood that a complete change in our basic energy systems may be necessary to accomplish
this, as well as new technical breakthroughs and large reductions in the capital cost of key components such as fuel cells.
