    • The National Vaccine Advisory Committee was established in 1987 to comply with Title XXI of the Public Health Service Act (P.L. 99-660) (Section 2105) (42 U.S. Code 300aa-5 (PDF - 78 KB)). Its purpose is to advise and make recommendations to the Director of the National Vaccine Program on matters related to program responsibilities as guided by the National Vaccine Plan and it’s five goals: • Develop new and improved vaccines• Enhance the vaccine safety system• Support communications to enhance informed vaccine decision-making• Ensure a stable supple of, access to, and better use of recommended vaccines in the United States• Increase global prevention of death and disease through safe and effective vaccination.In addition, as specified in the Public Health Service Act, NVAC:• Studies and recommends ways to encourage the availability of an adequate supply of safe and effective vaccination products in the States.• Recommends research priorities and other measures the Director of the National Vaccine Program should take to enhance the safety and efficacy of vaccines.• Advises the Director of the National Vaccine Program in implementation of sections 2102 and 2103 of the Public Health Service Act.• Identifies the most important areas of government and non-government cooperation that should be considered in implementing sections 2102 and 2103 of the Public Health Service Act.Recently, NVAC has focused on a series of initiatives in the Federal government that support the Affordable Care’s Act’s emphasis on prevention and access to vaccines, including financing issues. In addition to focusing on immunization-related provisions of the ACA, NVAC has developed a white paper on the nation’s vaccine safety system and annually reviews progress on the immunization-related targets of Health People 2020 and on relevant portions of HHS' Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities..
