Recommendations are provided in annual reports to the Secretary and Congress on nursing workforce issues. The 1st report (November
2001) had 1 recommendation related to the nursing workforce shortage. The 2nd report (November 2002) had a total of 2 recommendations;
1 general and 1 related to the nursing faculty shortage. The 3rd report (November 2003) had 1 recommendation related to nursing
shortage. The 4th report (covering FY 2003 and the first meeting in FY 2004) focusing on the aging population and the aging
nursing workforce has 5 recommendations. The 5th report on violence in the nursing workforce (meeting held April 2005, report
published December 2007) have 4 recommendations. The 6th report (meetings held November 2005 & April 2006, report published
January 2008) had 4 recommendations related to the nursing work environment in a changing health care environment. The 7th
report (meetings held November 2006 and April 2007, report published December 2009) had 10 recommendations emphasizing educating
the nursing workforce for emergency preparedness as well as information technology in nursing education and practice. The
8th report (meetings held November 2007 and May 2008, reported published October 2010) had 4 recommendations related to addressing
new challenges facing nursing education. The 9th report (from meetings held November, 2008 and April, 2009) had 4 recommendations
concerning the impact of the nurse faculty shortage on nurse education and practice. The 10th report (from meetings held November,
2009 and April, 2010) had a total of 3 recommendations concerning the role of nurses in Primary Care. The 11th report (from
meetings in November, 2010 and April, 2011) is still in draft form so total number of recommendations is not finalized, but
the theme of the report is surrounding diversity in nursing.
