    • The goal of NIH research is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the rarest genetic disorder to the common cold. The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. The Advisory Committee to the Director, NIH, advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Assistant Secretary for Health, and the Director, NIH, on policy matters pertinent to NIH mission responsibilities in the conduct and support of biomedical research, medical science, and biomedical communications. The ACD has addressed numerous issues in these areas including: biomedical resources; establishment or reorganization of NIH programs or offices, such as the intramural program and the Office of Medical Applications of Research; clinical gene transfer research; health disparities; the human genome; bioethics; stem cells; training of new researchers, bioinformatics, and extramural construction.
