  • Mission [1]
    • The goal of NIH research is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the rarest genetic disorder to the common cold. The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. The Director's Council of Public Representatives (COPR) consults with, advises and makes recommendations to the Director, NIH, on issues and concerns that are important to the broad development of NIH programmatic and research priorities. The COPR also assists the NIH in enhancing the participation of the public in NIH activities that have an impact upon the public, in increasing public understanding of the NIH and its programs, and in bringing important matters of public interest forward for discussion in public settings. The COPR meets its mission in addressing public input and participation into the activities of the NIH by seeking advice from special consultants, assembling ad hoc working groups, and convening conferences, workshops or other activities. Meetings of the full membership are held twice a year.
