The committee advised CDC that other components of the public health system should be aligned with NBCCEDP to produce a greater
demand for services. From a political perspective, documenting the unmet need in NBCCEDP would generate more resources and
support.• Emphasis should be placed on screening the population of women with the highest amount of cancer to balance the
limited resources of NBCCEDP and CDC’s efforts to meet the increased demand for services. However, this strategy would require
BCC Programs limiting screening to women >50 years of age.• NBCCEDP should serve as a model of care for the country. In this
effort, pro bono services and other local resources should be leveraged to cover referrals for diagnostic and treatment services.
Public health staff with knowledge of local communities also should be housed in state and local health departments and FQHCs.•
CDC should use the CDC Foundation and other non-governmental organizations to advocate for a specific Congressional line item
for NBCCEDP.• The possibility should be explored of redesigning NBCCEDP as a holistic women’s health program that would screen
for global wellness and fitness issues, particularly tobacco use, obesity and physical inactivity.
