During FY 2011, the EPA requested that the HSRB respond to approximately 25 charge questions in various topic areas. The Board
provided their responses to charge questions/recommendations in the following topic areas: a Carroll-Loye Biological Research,
Inc. Protocol No Mas 003, a Field Efficacy Test of PMD and Lemongrass Oil-based Repellent “No Mas” Against Mosquitoes; a new
scenario design and associated protocol from the Agricultural Handler Exposure Task Force (AHETF) to measure dermal and inhalation
exposure to applicators who use backpack sprayers or hand gun sprayers to apply pesticides in utility rights-of-way; a completed
scenario monograph and study report from the Antimicrobial Exposure Assessment Task Force II (AEATF–II): Dermal and Inhalation
Exposure of Professional Janitorial Workers Applying Liquid Antimicrobial Products to Indoor Floors Using Bucket and Mop;
a revised scenario design and associated protocol from the AHETF describing proposed research to monitor exposure of workers
who mix and load pesticides formulated as wettable powders in water-soluble packaging; an AHETF report of a completed scenario
monograph and study reports of five field studies measuring the dermal and inhalation exposure of workers applying liquid
spray pesticides to tree or trellis crops using closed cab airblast equipment; an AHETF scenario design and associated protocol
describing proposed research to monitor exposure of workers who mix and load pesticides formulated as wettable powders; completed
AHETF research on exposure of workers applying pesticide sprays using open-cab airblast equipment; a published report (Gulson
et al. 2010) of an intentional exposure human study measuring dermal absorption of zinc oxides contained in sunscreens; reconsideration
of two concerns previously raised by the HSRB in its June 2009 review of an intentional human dosing study with chlorpyrifos
(Kisicki et al., 1999); and completed AEATF-II research on exposure of professional janitorial workers when wiping indoor
surfaces with an antimicrobial pesticide. The Committee submitted three meeting reports to EPA’s Science Advisor summarizing
their advice and recommendations.
