  • Mission [1]
    • The IATTC GAC supports the U.S. Section of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), the Department of State, and other agencies of the United States Government, in a solely advisory capacity with respect to the U.S. participation in the work of the Commission in international tuna fisheries issues, with particular reference to the development of U.S. policies and positions. The Committee has provided advice and support for the U.S. delegation''s continued participation in the IATTC's tuna management program, as well as the International Dolphin Conservation Program. The dolphin protection program has been highly successful in reducing dolphin mortalities in the tuna fishery of the eastern tropical Pacific to historically low levels. Using effort limitations, the tuna conservation program sets a limit on the total allowable catch of tuna which can safely be taken in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. The economic value of this fishery is over $400 million annually.
