- Mission [1]
- The Overseas Schools Advisory Council supports Strategic Goal 7, Strengthening Consular and Management Capabilities in the
Department of State/USAID Strategic Plan, 2007-2012. The Council's activities fall under the Human Resources Strategic Priority
under this Strategic Goal. In addition, the Council's activities support American overseas schools in Management Goal #1,
Human Resources and Training in the Bureau of Administration's FY 2011 Performance Plan by Support posts abroad by ensuring
to the fullest extent possible the availability of elementary and secondary educational opportunities to prepare USG dependents
for reentry into the U.S. educational system. The Council supports the Department's Strategic Plan and the Bureau of Administration's
Performance Plan by obtaining information and counsel from the U.S. business community in order to advise the Office of Overseas
Schools concerning policy matters and necessary personnel and financial support for the overseas schools. USG employees stationed
abroad as well as overseas employees of U.S. corporations use these schools to provide high quality education for their school-age
dependents. During business trips abroad, Council members meet with members of the American business community and visit overseas
schools to review the schools' needs and U.S. assistance to these schools. The Council also supports these goals by encouraging
U.S., host, and third country firms and individuals to provide both financial and in-kind assistance to American-sponsored
overseas schools. In addition, the Council has provided materials to assist these schools in their own fund raising activities.
In the year 2010-2011, these schools generated a total of approximately $14,260,000 in financial and in-kind assistance, an
increase of $$279,000 contributed in 2008/2009. The Council further supports these goals by providing needed projects to enhance
the educational program of the 197American overseas schools. The projects are developed in cooperation with overseas regional
schools associations and financed by contributions from Council firms and other U.S. corporations. These educational projects
play a significant role in the overseas schools' efforts to improve their staffs, enrich their curricula, and permit thousands
of American children overseas to benefit from the newest educational materials and techniques. All of the funds that U. S.
corporations contribute to this program go directly to support the development of the educational enhancement projects for
the schools.
