In FY 2011, the Review Committe made:2 recommendations to the parties involved in two disputes that came before the Review
Committee;8 recommendations to Congress regarding a funding increase for the National NAGPRA Program and NAGPRA grants, the
development of NAGPRA compliance mechanisms for Federal agencies, Congress's conferring on Review Committee recommendations
approved by the Department of the Interior the force of mandatory authority, Congress's amending the definition of "Native
American" in the statute, Congress's enacting legislation to provide greater protection for Native American burials, Congress's
requesting that the Government Accountability Office conduct a study of museum compliance with NAGPRA, Congress's conducting
a hearing on progress made and barriers encountered in NAGPRA compliance, and Congress's mandating that museums having custody
of Federal collections disclose these collections to the appropriate Federal agencies; and13 recommendations to the Secretary
of the Interior and the National NAGPRA Program regarding the publication on the National NAGPRA Program's website of the
meeting materials provided to the Review Committee, the information provided by the National NAGPRA Program concerning the
grants administered by the Program, a description of the Review Committee member nomination and selection process, the National
NAGPRA Program's making a video of the symposium "NAGPRA at 20" available to the public, the National NAGPRA Program's creation
of a NAGPRA decision tree, the finalization of two studies undertaken by students who were supervised by National NAGPRA Program
staff, the National NAGPRA Program's augmenting its reporting on databases and the website,an update on the Department's response
to the recommendations in the GAO report on NAGPRA, an update on the Department's consultation with Indian tribes, a review
and response to a resolution of the Native American Repatriation Summit, the National NAGPRA Program's preparing a digest
of public comments on the progress made and barriers encountered in implementing NAGPRA, and the timing of the publication
of proposed rules so as to elicit Review Committee comments during a meeting.
