  • Mission [1]
    • DOE's mission is to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the U.S., to promote scientific and technological innovation in support of that mission, and to ensure the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex. The Department also has four strategic goals toward achieving its mission. (1)Defense - Protect national security by applying advanced science and nuclear technology to the Nation's defense. (2) Energy - Protect our national and economic security by promoting a diverse supply and delivery of reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy. (3)Science - Protect our national and economic security by providing world-class scientific research capacity and advancing scientific knowledge. (4) Environment - Protect the environment by providing a responsible resolution to the environmental legacy of the Cold War and by providing for the permanent disposal of the Nation's high-level radioactive waste. The committee ensures that BER supports a balanced and state-of-the-art research portfolio of research projects that contribute to all aspects of the DOE mission: climate and environmental research impacts the energy, environmental and science strategic goals; genomic sciences research impacts the energy, science, and environmental strategic goals; and radiochemistry and instrumentation research impacts the science strategic goal; low dose radiation research impacts all four strategic goals.
