Protect safety and ensure environmental stewardship in the maritime domain. In the maritime realm, DHS leads U.S. government efforts to safeguard lives and to protect the safety of our citizens through marine safety regulation and search and rescue activities; ensuring the safe operation and resilience of the marine transportation system; and enforcement of the maritime border and the Exclusive Economic Zone. DHS plays a leading role in ensuring environmental security, most notably in the maritime domain. In particular, DHS protects the marine environment from damage resulting from human activity, and protects the Nation's marine bio-mass, protected species, and marine habitats.
