The institute was created with one purpose in mind - elevating people's thinking to a level capable of changing their community and their world. We create opportunities to imagine by bringing people together in a stimulating environment to share, challenge and engage with each other.

• Jack Alderman: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR -- Jack Alderman has lived on Hilton Head Island for 22 years. He retired as Senior Vice President of the Branigar Organization - the real estate subsidiary of Union Camp and International Paper Company - after a 32 year career. He was responsible for the stewardship, planning, and permitting of 56,000 acres of company land in the Lowcountry, including Palmetto Bluff and Buckwalter. He also managed Branigar communities in Illinois and North Carolina. Jack is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio. His community activities have included terms as Board Chair of the United Way of the Lowcountry, the Greater Island Council, Success by Six, and Born to Read. He led capital campaigns that funded the Bluffton Boys and Girls Club and the just-completed renovations at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island, where he is an Elder. He currently chairs the Vision Steering Committee of the Greater Island Council.

Members of our board, with their unique backgrounds, have all demonstrated successful business track records, significant leader-ship roles in non-profit organizations, and a passion for giving back ... while also looking forward. This is a group capable of creating a synergy the Island has never before experienced.


• Allen Ward: CHAIRMAN -- Allen Ward is president of Ward Edwards Engineering, is a professional engineer, and lives in Bluffton, South Carolina. He is a Liberty Fellow in South Carolina, a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, and a member of the Vision Steering Committee of the Greater Island Council of Hilton Head and Bluffton. He is a former Board member of United Way of the Lowcountry, Technical College of the Lowcountry Foundation, Atlantic Community Bank, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, Beaufort Chamber of Commerce, Coastal Carolina Medical Center, and the May River Waterbody Implementation Committee. Ward graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.E. in Environmental Systems Engineering.


• David W. Ames: FOUNDER -- David W. Ames graduated from Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his Masters degree in Architecture with emphasis in city and regional planning. He has planned and developed projects for his own account and has consulted in both public and private sector community planning throughout the Southeast, Mexico and the Caribbean. He moved to the island in 1973 to work for the Sea Pines Company. He currently serves on the Town's LMO Re-write Committee and GIC's Vision Steering Committee. He chaired the Mayor's Task Force on the Island's Future and the $4.5 million capital campaign of The Children's Center and co-chaired the $6 million capital campaign of the Boys and Girls Club. He has served on numerous local and state boards.


• Kaye Black: VICE CHAIR -- Kaye Black was owner and president of Curry Printing, Hilton Head Island, SC for 33 years. She serves on a number of local non-profit boards, including the Art League of Hilton Head, The Children's Center, and Women in Philanthropy. She is past board chair of Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce, United Way of the Lowcountry, and a founding member of the Zonta Club of Hilton Head Island. Kaye grew up in Memphis, TN and is a graduate of Clemson University.


• Dudley King: Dudley King has been Owner and President of Plantation Interiors, Inc. on Hilton Head Island since 1983. Previously, he held Sales and Brand Management positions with The Coca Cola Company in Atlanta. He holds a BA in Economics from Middlebury College and an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance. He has served on numerous community Boards, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and the Children's Center, where he chaired the New Building Committee for the facility at Jarvis Creek Park. He currently also serves on Hargray's Caring Coins Grant Committee and the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, where he chairs the Grants Committee. He has resided in Sea Pines for 30 years.


• Jim MacLeod: Jim MacLeod is Chairman and CEO of Coastal Bancshares, Inc., President and COO of CoastalStates Bank, and Senior Managing Director and CEO of Homeowners Mortgage, Inc. He serves on the Board of Directors of CoastalStates Bank and Homeowners Mortgage Enterprises, Inc. Before joining CoastalSouth, Mr. MacLeod worked for Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation for 22 years, most recently serving as Executive Vice President in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mr. MacLeod is a Director of Sykes Enterprises, Inc., and is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Allianz Funds. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hilton Head Prep and was a member of the Finance Committee of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. Mr. MacLeod holds a BS in Economics from the University of Tampa, a Masters in City Planning from Georgia Institute of Technology and a MS in Real Estate from Georgia State University.


• Gail A. Quick: TREASURER -- Gail A. Quick has lived full-time on Hilton Head Island since 1978. She has served as Vice Chancellor at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Associate Chancellor of Grants and Development USCB, Vice President of Student and College Development and Executive Director of the Foundation at the Technical College of the Lowcountry. She is a former Chair of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, member of the board of trustees of Coastal Carolina Hospital, board member of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, past President of the Beaufort County Literacy and South Carolina Literacy Associations, member of the 2010 Hilton Head Island's Mayor's Task Force and Chairman of the HHI Land Management Ordinance Committee. Currently serving on the HHI Public Arts Committee, Greater Island Council Vision Committee, Shipyard Property Owner's Association, Vice Chairman of the HHI Land Management Ordinance Committee and chairs the HHI Planning Commission.


• John Shkor: SECRETARY -- John Shkor moved to Hilton Head Island in 2003, after a 35 year career in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served as both an operator and as a legal officer. His duties saw him play a role in marine safety and environmental protection, the drug war at sea, Cuban and Haitian mass migration operations, and the Law of the Sea Convention. He served on the staff of then Vice President George Bush and later participated in the establishment of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. He oversaw counterdrug operations in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific as director of the DoD Joint Interagency task force in Key West, FL. He served twice as Chief Counsel of the Coast Guard and as Commander, Atlantic Area. After leaving the Coast Guard he served as chief operating officer in the nascent Transportation Security Administration. He is a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (B.S. 1966), the Georgetown University Law School (J.D. 1973), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.S. Mgmt. 1985). John is a member of the Greater Island Council.
