• ECI Council: The ECI Council oversees the work of the Earth Charter International Secretariat. It sets major goals, policies, and strategies for ECI, and provides guidance and leadership to the broader Initiative. The ECI Council is not a legally incorporated entity. The Council elects its own members in consultation with members of the global network of Earth Charter supporters.


• Mateo A. Castillo Ceja: (Mexico) Mateo A. Castillo Ceja was the head of the Coordinating Unity of Social Participation and Transparency in the Ministry of Environment of Mexico. Previously he served as president of the Ecological State Council of Michoacan, Mexico, and, with many others, has instigated processes of social participation in the development of environmental public policies for a sustainable Mexico. He is an altruistic person who takes part in the world humanitarian movement. He is considered a national expert in the implementation of local Agenda 21. He has been a representative of civil society in Mexico in many forums and international summits. Castillo is the main developer in Mexico of the Earth Charter and the founder of the National Secretariat. He was awarded the Citizen Merit Prize in 2003, and in 2004 he received honorary mention in the National Prize for Ecological Merit. In 2005, he was awarded the Maximo Kalaw Award for his work in promoting the Earth Charter in Mexico. Mr. Castillo holds a Master's degree in quality and competitiveness and is a biochemist in the area of pharmacology.


• Alexander Likhotal: (Russia / Switzerland) Alexander Likhotal is currently president of Green Cross International. He received his Ph.D in Political Science in 1972 from the Institute of International Affairs in Moscow, the subject of his thesis being "The Shaping of the British Security Policy". He started his academic career as a lecturer at the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs, where he became senior research fellow at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the USSR. In 1988 he became professor of political science and international relations at the Diplomatic Academy, and in the same year was appointed vice-rector. During the wake of Gorbachev's perestroika, being already a well known expert in the field of European security, he received a proposal to become the chief analyst of NATO politics in the International Department of the Central Committee of the CSPU - one of the Soviet foreign policy co-ordination bodies. In 1991 Alexander Likhotal was appointed deputy spokesman and adviser to the president of the USSR. Since then he has been an advisor to Mr Gorbachev, founder of Green Cross, for many years.


• Oscar Motomura: (Brazil), co-chair -- Oscar Motomura is the founder and chief executive officer of the Amana-Key Group, a center for excellence in management, a network of associates with global reach, based in São Paulo, Brazil. The purpose of Amana-Key is to serve as a world reference for radical innovation in management that is capable of generating the genuine development of people, organizations, communities, and the greater whole. The Amana-Key Group has adopted the Earth Charter as a reference for its education programmes and innovation retreats. Thousands of leaders from corporations and the government take Amana-Key programmes every year, where their awareness of global issues affecting humanity is expanded along with their understanding of the importance of contributing to our collective evolution, through ethical and conscious management practices. Mr. Motomura started his career in Brazil in a large, multinational financial institution, where he reached a senior management position at the age of 26. He founded his own company at 28, which was the starting point for what is now Amana-Key. Motomura is known in Brazil as one the most creative specialists in the area of strategy. He holds degrees in business administration and social psychology.


• Alide Roerink: (The Netherlands) Alide Roerink is an anthropologist and has been involved over the years in networking, advocacy, and policy development for gender justice, international solidarity, and global governance. In the '90s Alide Roerink was coordinator of an influential network of gender experts in development agencies in The Netherlands. From 2000 to 2013 she worked at the National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development (NCDO). She coordinated several multi-stakeholder consultations in the context of key UN conferences on sustainable development and international cooperation. Together with Earth Charter Commissioner Ruud Lubbers, Alide initiated the Round Table of Worldconnectors for People and the Planet (www.worldconnectors.nl) and recently the new Earth Charter Fund and Earth Charter Friends network in the Netherlands (www.earthcharter.nl). Alide cooperated with the Earth Charter Initiative in the launch of the Earth Charter in 2000 in the Peace Palace in The Hague and in several key global Earth Charter events, such as the celebration of 5 and 10 years Earth Charter. Alide Roerink initiated and co-edited the book Earth Charter in Action: Towards a Sustainable World. Alide Roerink was advisor to the Earth Charter Initiative before she joined the Council.


• Kartikeya Sarabhai: (India), co-chair -- Kartikeya V. Sarabhai is the founder and director of the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), a national institution engaged in promoting environmental awareness and conservation as well as education for sustainable development. Starting small in Ahmedabad in 1984, CEE today works at the national and international level with a staff of over 200 professionals and 40 offices across India, as well as in Australia and Sri Lanka. In 2005, CEE received the Global award for Outstanding Service to Environmental Education from the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). Mr.Sarabhai also set up VIKSAT, an NGO working towards people's participation in natural resource management, as well as Sundervan, a nature discovery centre. Mr. Sarabhai has served on several committees of the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. These include greening India's formal education system and initiatives for biodiversity education. Mr. Sarabhai has long been associated with IUCN, and was the chair of South and South-East Asia, IUCN Commission on Education and Communication. He is currently vice-chair of the Indian National Commission. Mr. Sarabhai was instrumental in initiating SASEANEE, the South and Southeast Asian Network for Environment Education. He was a member of the Indian delegation to UNCED at Rio and WSSD at Johannesburg and was co-author of India's report for UNCED. He has been closely associated with communication initiatives of UNEP, especially those connected with Ozone. Under his leadership CEE organized the first International Conference of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in January 2005. Mr. Sarabhai received the Tree of Learning Award from The World Conservation Union in 1998 in appreciation of his contributions to the field of environmental education and communication. In 2005, The Indian Institute of Human Rights presented Mr. Sarabhai with the World Human Rights Promotion Award.


• Mirian Vilela: (Brazil) Mirian Vilela is the executive director of Earth Charter International and has been involved in the initiative internationally since early 1996. She has coordinated an international process of consultation, and set up partnerships with organizations and individuals who contributed to the consultation process and who continue to be involved in the implementation phase of the Charter. She has organized and facilitated numerous international workshops and seminars on values and principles for sustainability. Prior to her work with the Earth Charter, Ms. Vilela worked for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) for two years in preparation of the 1992 UN Earth Summit and is a member of the UNESCO Expert Reference Group for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). She is currently a faculty member of the University for Peace. She holds a master's degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she was an Edward Mason Fellow.

The ECI Secretariat coordinates activities with Affiliates and provides them with guidance and resource materials.

• HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal: Jordan -- For more than 20 years, has worked nationally, regionally, and internationally to promote human development, gender equity and the well-being of children; founding chairperson of the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD), formerly known as the Queen Alia Fund for Social Development (QAF), the first non-governmental organization to address development issues at the national level in Jordan; in 1992, initiated the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) and became its chairperson, establishing JNCW Forum in 1995; also became president of the Mabarrat Um Al Hussein, a pioneering orphanage providing full care, education, and vocational training; currently provides leadership for more than 25 local and national institutions and societies; was voted Arab Woman of the Year in 1995; awarded the Grand Cordon of the Jewelled Al Nahda "Renaissance" by His Majesty the late King Hussein in 1994 in recognition of her development and humanitarian efforts for her country.

• A.T. Ariyaratne: Sri Lanka -- Founder of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement of Sri Lanka; grassroots development leader and international award winner who derives his inspiration from Buddhist spiritual teachings and Gandhian social action; "Sarvodaya Shramadana" means "The Awakening of All Through the Sharing of Effort"; this message has spread to all parts of Sri Lanka and is bearing fruit in about a third of the country's villages, numbering over 8000, and embracing a diverse Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim population; awarded the Gandhi Prize in 1996.

• Pauline Tangiora: New Zealand/Aotearoa -- Member of the International Steering Committee on Health for Minorities; executive member of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples' Regional Women's Committee; member of Rigoberta Menchu's Committee, Indigenous Initiative for Peace; lifetime member of the Maori Women's Welfare Leagues; director of Maori International; a trained family counselor and justice liaison; in 1989 awarded the Queen's Service Medal for her community work in New Zealand and in 1990 awarded the New Zealand Commemoration Medal.


• Erna Witoelar: Indonesia -- Minister of Settlements and Regional Development in Indonesia; founder of both the Indonesian Forum for the Environment and Friends of the Environment Fund; former chair of the Consumers International; has had more than thirty years of experience in civil society leadership and decision-making positions at local, national, and international levels; trustee of the Indonesia WWF Foundation; member of the Parliament of the Republic of Indonesia, the steering committee of the Anti Corruption Forum and the Working Group on Civil Society Empowering; recipient of several awards, including the 1996 President of the Republic of Indonesia's Development Medal on Environment.


• Mikhail Gorbachev: Russia (Co-chair) -- Served as president of the Soviet Union from 1990-1991 and as general secretary of the Polit Bureau of the Central Committee, Communist Party of Soviet Union, from 1985 to 1991; the founder and president (1993-present) of Green Cross International; president, International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies (Gorbachev Foundation) since 1992; recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, 1990; also recipient of the orders of Lenin, of Red Banner of Labor, Badge of Honor; worked as a machine operator at the Stavropol Agricultural Institute in 1946 and attended Moscow State University where he graduated in law.


• Pierre Calame: France -- Chief engineer, École Polytechnique (France); former general secretary of Usinor, an iron and steel industrial group; since 1986, chairman of the Foundation Charles Leopold Mayer for the Progress of Humankind, a Swiss-based international foundation that endeavors to assist humanity in addressing the major challenges of the 21st century; founding member of the Alliance for a Responsible and United World.


• Ruud Lubbers: The Netherlands -- Currently the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; former Prime Minister of The Netherlands, (1982-1994); professor of Globalization at GLOBUS (Institute for Globalization and Sustainable Development), Tilburg University; chair, Clingendael, Dutch Institute for International Relations; chair, Scientific Institute of the political party Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA); chair, Social Council of the Tinbergen Institute; former minister for economic affairs (1973-1977) in the Netherlands; former president of World Wildlife Fund (1999-2001).

• Henriette Rasmussen: Greenland -- Teacher and journalist; member of the Greenland Home Rule Parliament for eleven years, serving for four years as a member of the Cabinet with the responsibility for Social Affairs and Labor; delegate to the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993, where her idea to found a permanent forum for indigenous peoples under the United Nations system was widely recognized by representatives of both states and indigenous peoples; delegate to the UN Social Summit in Copenhagen in 1994; for many years, served as chief technical advisor of ILO for the promotion of rights of indigenous and tribal peoples; currently a member of the IUCN Global Council.


• Awraham Soeterndorp: The Netherlands -- a rabbi, human rights activist, environmentalist and writer; born in Amsterdam in 1943 and saved as an infant by non-Jews during the Second World War; reestablished Jewish communities in the Netherlands; the co-chair of the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders and a founding member of Green Cross International; founder and chair of the Hope for Children Foundation, which aims to secure a percentage of annual gross national incomes for the education of children world wide.


• Mercedes Sosa: Argentina,(Co-chair) -- Internationally known singer and social activist; member of Latin American music school of the "nueva trova"; suffered exile during the years of dictatorship in Argentina because of her political and social criticism expressed through her music; throughout her life, has supported causes related to human rights, the dignity of peoples, self-determination, conservation, the renewal of Latin American values, and regional unity; solidarity, hope, and love are themes always present in her songs.


• Leonardo Boff: Brazil -- Internationally recognized Roman Catholic theologian and author of many books; a leader of the liberation theology movement, who in recent books such as Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor has integrated his spiritual vision and commitment to liberation of the poor with a deep concern for the environment; ordained as a Roman Catholic Franciscan priest in 1964; resigned from the priesthood in 1991 but continues to be inspired in his teaching and writing by the vision of Saint Francis of Assisi; professor of theology at the Institute Teologico Franciscano and the University of Rio de Janeiro; served as editor of Brazil's foremost theological journal, Revista Eclesiastica Brasileira.

• Steven C. Rockefeller: United States of America -- professor emeritus of religion at Middlebury College, where he also served as dean of the College; in recent years, his research and writing have focused on global ethics, sustainable development, and the interrelation of democracy, ecology, and spirituality; active for many years in the field of philanthropy, he is chairperson of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, a New York-based foundation with international programs in sustainable resource use, the strengthening of civil society, and education; a trustee of the Asian Cultural Council and a member of the Council of the University for Peace in Costa Rica. Has been involved in the Earth Charter Initiative since 1995 and chaired the Earth Charter international drafting committee (1997-2000); joined the Earth Charter Commission in May 2000.


• Severn Cullis Suzuki: Canada -- Graduated from Yale University with a BA in 2001; active in environmental work since kindergarten; worked with native peoples in British Columbia, Southeast Asia, and the Amazon to protect threatened forests from logging; adopted into the Raven Clan of the Haida Nation and was given the name Killthgula Gaayaa, Good Speaker; founded the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group that raised money to participate in the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 "to act as a conscience to the decision-makers"; in many venues - the Global Forum, the Earth Parliament, the Plenary Session of the gatherings on the necessity of changing our values, of listening to children, and of behaving as if their future matters; also, a television host and presenter; has participated in a number of programs in Canada, the U.S. and Britain; has written many articles on environmental issues and published a book; received the Global 500 Award in 1993.


• ECI Partners: Strategic Partners are organizations whose activities are directly and programmatically supportive to the Earth Charter and the Earth Charter Initiative, or whose activities are in harmony with Earth Charter principles. These will mostly be international organizations, but they may also be nationally or locally focused. • Global Reporting Initiative: The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a network-based organization that has pioneered the development of the sustainability reporting framework and is committed to its continuous improvement and application worldwide.


• Green Cross International: Green Cross International is an environmental organization. Its mission is to help ensure a just, sustainable and secure future for all by fostering a value shift and cultivating a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility in humanity's relationship with nature.

• Transformative Learning Centre: The Transformative Learning Centre provides an interdepartmental structure for community-university partnerships in research and field development. It organizes many colloquia, debates and conferences.


• UPEACE: The UN-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) offers a unique and innovative multicultural teaching programme to provide graduate students from all regions of the world the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills on key issues related to the prevention of conflict and the peace building.


• University for the International Cooperation: The University for the International Cooperation (UCI) dedicated to the training of professional leaders able to lead and drive the changes required for sustainable economic, environmental, cultural and political development in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean Sea.

• Mirian Vilela: Mirian is the Executive Director of the Earth Charter International Secretariat and the Center for Education for Sustainable Development at UPEACE, Mirian has been working with the Earth Charter Initiative since early 1996. She is coordinating the newly established UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development with the Earth Charter. Over the years she has lead and facilitated numerous international workshops, courses and seminars on values and principles for sustainability. Prior to her work with the Earth Charter, Mirian worked for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) for two years in preparation of the 1992 UN Earth Summit and a year at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). She actively participated in the 2002 World Summit of Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, and the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development/Rio+20. She is a member of the UNESCO Expert Reference Group for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Mirian holds a B.Sc. in International Trade and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she was an Edward Mason Fellow. She is originally from Brazil.


• Alicia Jimenez: Alicia has been working in conservation and sustainable development field since 1998, after she graduated as a biologist from the University of Costa Rica. She worked several years in IUCN Mesoamerica's Regional Office and then started a professional services co-op called Coopesolidar, based in San Jose, Costa Rica. She also worked at the National University of Costa Rica. As part of these previous work experiences she did extensive field work in community-conservation projects, and environmental education processes, in Costa Rica and occasionally in other Central American countries. In 2006 she joined the ECI Secretariat, and is in charge of promoting as widely as possible the Earth Charter, especially in Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific. In addition, she is involved with the Secretariat's projects on education for sustainable development. Currently, she is IUCN CEC national activator for Costa Rica. Alicia has a MSc on Resource Development from Michigan State University. She is from Costa Rica.


• Douglas F. Williamson: Douglas is a linguist, entertainer, filmmaker, and environmental sustainability professional, specializing in communications. He is the Coordinator for Interactivity and Social Media for the Earth Charter International Secretariat. A native New Yorker, he holds Master degrees in International Affairs and in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, the former from American University's School of International Service and the latter from UPEACE, has worked for several international environmental NGOs, the United Nations University, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Change Division. As a filmmaker, Douglas has produced many short films and documentaries, several of which have won awards and selections to film festivals.


• Marcello Hernandez: Marcello is the International Youth Coordinator at the Earth Charter International Secretariat. He has a Master's degree in Environmental Management and a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. Currently he is pursuing a second master's degree in Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health in the University of Edinburgh. He is involved in a Costa Rican youth network focused on climate change and is part of the Climate Reality Project of Al Gore. As ECI Youth Coordinator his main responsibilities are to raise awareness of the Earth Charter to youth and to facilitate dialogue and capacity building to youth groups. He is also coordinating an on line youth open/wiki space for sharing experiences.
