Scope -- Instead of defining policies on the basis of current trends, Digital Futures empowers stakeholders to co-create futures that matter to them and to work backwards to see if and how these futures might or might not grow out of the present. Digital Futures is neither about predicting the future nor about pre-empting the policy decisions of future European Commissions. It is rather about hosting and facilitating futures reflections, anticipating possible issues and generating ideas to inspire future European Commissions' strategic choices.

Digital Futures' centre of gravity is on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). However, the scope includes also long term developments at the intersection between ICT and society, economy, environment, politics, humanities and other key enabling technologies and sciences. The project does not encompass too narrow aspects that, although important, are disconnected from or marginally related to ICT. Though the scope of Digital Futures is long term, some of its result may also be relevant to the annual review of the Digital Agenda, Europe 2020, and the content definition of Horizon 2020.

Digital Futures is a foresight project launched by the Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) to prepare for reflections on ICT policies beyond 2020. The project taps into the collective wisdom and aspirations of stakeholders to co-create long term visions (on a time horizon 2040-50) and fresh ideas for policies that can inspire the future strategic choices of DG CONNECT and the European Commission.
